PrintED® Pre-Assessment Tests and Certification Examinations
The Graphic Arts Education and Research Foundation (GAERF®) provides online (web-based) PrintED Pre-assessment Tests and PrintED Certification Examinations in three areas of PrintED accreditation.
- Introduction to Graphic Communications
- Press Operations
- Digital File Preparation
Pre-Assessment Tests
Purpose of the Pre-Assessments
The purpose of the pre-assessments is to establish baseline knowledge and skills of the students. Teachers can then use the information gained in the pre-assessment report to make instructional decisions about student strengths and needs.
Pre-Assessment Eligibility
Students in PrintED applicant and accredited programs are eligible to take the PrintED Pre-assessments.
Certification Examinations
Purpose of the Certification Examinations
Students are encouraged to take the national examination(s) to verify the level of knowledge that they have achieved. Attaining a sufficient score(s) will result in the awarding of a certification(s), which will be of value to students whether entering the competitive workforce or pursuing further education. Students who achieve an exceptional score(s) on the examination(s) will be awarded certification(s) with distinction.
Many schools have developed agreements to grant college credit to students who successfully complete the required PrintED competency/performance levels.
Examination Eligibility
Students who are enrolled in a PrintED accredited program, and who have been identified by the instructor as having demonstrated proficiency in completing at least 80% of the required hands-on tasks, may register to take the certification examination(s). Online certification examinations may be conducted only at PrintED accredited schools.

GAERF has contracted with The National Occupational Testing Institute (NOCTI) to be the assessment vendor for the Print-ED Pre-assessment Tests and the PrintED Certification Examinations.
GAERF has elected to utilize NOCTI's secure online examination delivery option. This option increases the security of the PrintED Pre-assessment Tests and the PrintED Certification Examinations by decreasing the opportunities for the tests to be compromised.
The date and time for each examination will be determined by each individual school and may be conducted at any time. All examinations must be conducted in a proctored session.
The registration fee is $11.00 per student for each PrintED pre-assessment test.
The registration fee is $30.00 per student for each PrintED certification examination.
